New York Yankees News: Ivan Nova Set For Return

New York Yankees right hand pitcher Ivan Nova is finally set to complete his comeback from tommy john surgery and is set to be activated off the disable list and start Wednesday’s finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.

For the time being, the Yankees have announced that they will go with a six man rotation once Nova returns on Wednesday. However, I don’t believe this will last very long. Nova’s return will eventually force one of their starters to the bullpen or maybe even the minors.

So who will it be?

Despite the general complaints amongst the Yankees fan base, everyone needs to realize that C.C. Sabathia isn’t going to the bullpen. He’s undoubtedly the outspoken leader of the pitching staff and has veteran leadership within the Yankees clubhouse.

Instead, I think Nathan Eovaldi and Adam Warren might be pitching for their starting jobs once Nova returns. If Adam Warren eventually loses the battle, the Yankees will benefit from sending him to the bullpen. However, if Adam Warren out pitches Eovaldi, the Yankees might elect to send Eovaldi down to the minors to work on his command.

Anyway, Nova is about 13 months removed from surgery. The results of his rehab assignments have been underwhelming to say the least. In his most recent start, he had little command of his pitches and allowed five earned runs on seven hits in five innings pitched for the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate in Scranton. However, other reports have indicated that his velocity is back to where it was pre-surgery.

Wednesday should be incredibly interesting to say the least.
