All year Yankee fans have not been a fan of the starting second baseman, Stephen Drew. Many believe the Yankees should have gone with youth at second base, but Brian Cashman believed the best option was to sign the 32-year-old veteran. While Drew has had a decent amount of power with 11 home runs, everything else offensively has not been there this year.
Stephen Drew is the everyday second baseman, and has a bating average below the Mendoza line, (under .200) and has an on base percentage under .270. These numbers are pathetic for major league starting position players. What has saved Stephen Drew this season is his power numbers. Drew has 11 home runs, which is the third most on the team, and those numbers you cannot deny. After Stephen Drew hit two solo home runs, Joe Girardi talked about the Yankee’s second baseman and how perplexing his season has been.
"‘It’s tough to figure out, I’ve got to tell you,’ Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ‘First home run he hit a long ways and hit it hard. I’ve said all along he’s swung the bat better than his numbers indicate. It’s shown up really only in the home runs. I think he’s hit some balls hard and hasn’t gotten hits.’"
In June Stephen Drew has been a better hitter, batting .246 for the month. Drew’s on base percentage has also improved to slightly over .300. These number are not great, but for a hitter that’s still hitting under .200 these numbers are great. Stephen Drew commented on his struggles, and believes his best days are in front of him.
"‘[I’m] working hard at it,’ the 32-year-old infielder said. ‘[It] seems to be coming along pretty good. I’m trying to get into good counts and put good swings on [the ball]. The month’s been pretty good for me.’"
As much as it pains me to say this, Stephen Drew is our best option at second base right now. There I said it, you cannot argue with his power numbers. Hopefully Stephen Drew will get his other offensive numbers up to match his power numbers.
