The New York Yankees used the long ball to beat the Miami Marlins 9-3 on Thursday in the Bronx. The pitching matchup was CC Sabathia and Mat Latos, but the story of the night was hits. The game was close until a Carlos Beltran 2 run home run gave the Yankees a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh, and the Yankees added six more runs in the bottom of the eighth. The stadium was electric as we watched Alex Rodriguez pursue 3000 hits.

Rodriguez hit number 2,998 and 2,999 on Thursday. His first hit scored Brett Gardner for the first Yankee run of the night.  Gardner had singled, and was moved to third by a Chase Headley single when Rodriguez hit him home the Yankees led 1-0. The Yankees loaded the bases that inning, but did not score as Beltran struck out swinging at a ball in the dirt.

Sabathia may have been inspired by Michael Pineda’s no-hit bid last night as he did not give up a hit through three innings. Marlin’s leadoff hitter Dee Gordon led off the fourth with a triple to notch the first hit against Sabathia. Left fielder Christian Yelich singled to left field to score Gordon to tie the game 1-1. The Marlins continued to take advantage of Sabathia, scoring two more runs off the big lefty.

In the fifth inning, Sabathia gave up a leadoff single to Jeff Baker and hit the next batter Justin Bour. Mathis hit a sacrifice fly to Beltran which scored Baker. The Marlins led 2-1. Their final run of the night came in the sixth when Giancarlo Stanton launched a solo home run to left field to extend their lead to 3-1.

The Yankees did not stay down for long as they tied the game in the bottom of the sixth after the rookie Mason Williams doubled to the centerfield wall. But the big blow came off the bat of the gritty Gardner, who rocketed a a 2-run home run into the right field bleachers. Gardner tied the game and knocked Latos out of the game. Rodriguez came up to bat against Marlins relief pitcher Mike Dunn with the game tied at 3, but he flew out to right field to end the inning leaving the game all knotted up.

In the seventh Justin Wilson tossed a scoreless inning. The Yankees took the lead off a Beltran 2-run home run. From there it was all about the Yankees and A-Rod’s 3000th hit. A-Rod came to the plate in the 8th inning against Sam Dyson looking to get the big hit. Dyson clearly wanted no part of Rodriguez, walking him on four straight pitches. The Yankees took advantage and tacked on 4 more runs in the top of the ninth. The insurance runs allowed Girardi to send in Chris Martin for the bottom of the ninth which gave closer Dellin Betances the night off. Despite allowing an earned run on three hits, Martin polished off the bll game and preserved the Yankee lead.

Rodriguez’s quest for 3000 hits will continue tomorrow as the Yankees begin a three game series against the Tigers in the Bronx as the Adam Warren will face Justin Verlander. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 start time.
