On last night’s episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by KNODA.com, I started off the show by talking about the New York Yankees (34-28) recent series at Camden Yards against the Orioles. While they did lose two of three games in that series, they were able to salvage the series with a 5-3 win yesterday.

While Adam Warren did not complete five innings, New York’s bullpen trio of Chasen Shreve, Justin Wilson, and new closer Dellin Betances were able to keep the O’s off the board in the final 4.1 innings. One other positive from the weekend series was Alex Rodriguez. On Saturday, A-Rod hit his 666th home run of his career and is now just the second player in baseball history to go over 2,000 RBI’s in his career.

Tonight, the Yankees began a four game home-and-home series against the Miami Marlins (27-37). They will play games tonight and tomorrow at Marlins Park with Wednesday and Thursdays’ games taking place at Yankee Stadium. It’s been a season with many headlines for Miami, but most of them have been for the wrong reasons.

Back on May 18, the Marlins made the decision to fire manager Mike Redmond after just two full seasons as manager. Owner Jeffrey Loria decided to hire Dan Jennings, the team’s general manager, to be the new manager. Even though Miami won ten games in April and May, they are playing better baseball in June as they have already won seven of their 13 contests.

When you talk about Miami, you have to talk about Giancarlo Stanton. The 25-year-old right fielder, who signed a 13-year, $325 million contract this winter, is hitting .261 with 23 home runs and 59 RBI’s. In 49 at-bats this month, he is hitting .388 with eight home runs and 15 RBI’s. Even though Stanton has had an excellent season, the Marlins are 25th in baseball in runs scored.

With the starting rotation missing Jose Fernandez and Henderson Alvarez, it has struggled mightily. Miami’s starters’ ERA is 4.21, which is 11th in the National League. Their bullpen isn’t much better. The ‘pen has given up a total of 91 earned runs, which is the fourth most in the NL.

To talk more about the Marlins, I spoke with Daniel Zylberkan of Marlin Maniac and Andrew Miller, a former member of our social media team here at Yanks Go Yard. Daniel and Andrew gave their takes on Stanton, Jennings, and talked about which Marlins players could be available at the trade deadline? Here are some of the topics we discussed:

  • Any momentum that the Marlins take from winning three of four against the Rockies this weekend
  • Takeaways from the Jennings hire and the Stanton mega contract
  • Was Miami too quick in firing their former manager, Mike Redmond?
  • Pitching Matchup Breakdown
