New York Yankees Editorial: Young Players Beginning To Chip In

It’s nice that when the New York Yankees have an injury, they don’t have to go and a 4-A kind of player from the minors. The Yankees farm system is finally producing viable major league candidates to supplement the other players that they have. Per the USA Today, in the past three years, the Yankees have had all of three players younger than 24 to have more than 30 plate appearances.  They had a grand total of 0 (!) pitchers younger than 24 with 12 innings.

Last year it was Shane Greene who they used in a deal for Didi Gregorius. As much as I’m not exactly the president of the Didi Fan Club, I will admit he is better than he was to start the season. Greene started out on fire but now finds himself in AAA for the Tigers.

Jose Pirela was on the team for a bit (though he didn’t really play cuz Joe Girardi loves him some Stephen Drew who either gets an extra-base hit or gets an out).

Out of the bullpen, we’ve seen Chase Shreve be the real prize out of the Manny Banuelos trade, not David Carpenter. We caught a glimpse of the strikeout factory Jacob Lindgren. While Lindgren didn’t shine in his first try up here, that’s okay. Mariano Rivera wasn’t what he became the first time around either. Now it’s Jose Ramirez‘s turn to get another shot, as he’s proven himself in AAA so far this season.

In the outfield, Slade Heathcott, Ramon Flores and Mason Williams have all shown glimpses of their ability in their time up replacing Jacoby Ellsbury. We saw Williams display some defense on Saturday night. He even had his first major league hit as a homer.

The Yankees finally have some prospects they can call upon. There are more coming. The future is bright and the future is helping in the present.
