New York Yankees Editorial: What The Bullpen Strategy Should Be Now

With Andrew Miller‘s injury, what was the New York Yankees biggest strength is now a big question mark. The shutdown closer is now on the 15-Day DL. While the injury is being blamed on fatigue and overuse ( I agree with what Joel Sherman says in this). Now it’s time to figure out what the strategy should be.

First of all, Joe Girardi needs to get over his trust issues. That’s what landed the Yankees and Miller in this situation anyway. If the Yankees have a four or five run lead in the ninth, Dellin Betances should not be in the game. He should be hanging out in the bullpen chewing Big League Chew. Bringing Miller into games like this is what may have caused his injury. Don’t drag Betances down too the way Joe Torre did Scott Proctor.

Justin Wilson deserves a shot as the eighth inning guy. He hasn’t given up a run since May 24. In that time, he’s thrown seven innings, given up just three hits, walked three and struck out two.

Jacob Lindgren may eventually earn that role, but after what happened on Wednesday, i highly doubt Girardi trusts him for it. Lindgren and/or Chris Martin should be in the seventh inning role. You don’t draft a kid in the second round last year and put him up in the show if you don’t think he can handle it. It’s time for Lindgren to show he belongs and help continue making the bullpen a strength.

The Yankees next day off is isn’t until July 2nd. Bullpen management is going to be key. Girardi can’t afford to burn out the other arms like Miller.
