Carlos Beltran had such a horrendous start to the 2015 season that many people believed it was not just a slump, but father time calling his number. Then April turned to May, and Carlos Beltran started to heat up, and play more like the player the Yankees expected to see after they signed him to a three-year deal.
"‘I understand that a lot of times there are baseball players who have one bad month and people start to think that maybe they’re done,’ Beltran told NJ Advance Media in Spanish. ‘But the season is six months long, and you have to take it one month at a time. I had a bad month in April. It’s not how you envision starting the season, but at the end of the day, it’s only one month.’"
I raise my hand, and say I was wrong with Carlos Beltran. The start of the season was not just a slow start, but his worst start to any season with an on-base percentage of .216, and ZERO home runs. I knew that Beltran would not stay at the .162 batting average that he was hitting, but in May he came out swinging.
In May, Carlos Beltran batted just under .300 with four home runs and 14 RBI. Beltran continues to swing the bat well in June, and has put that month of April behind him. When talking to NJ.com Carlos Beltran talked about how his experience really helped him through his struggles.
"‘What they say, they can say it, but I know where I stand,’ Beltran said. ‘I know how many years I’ve been in the big leagues. I’m aware of my age. I know that I’m not 21 years old anymore. I know that I’m 38. I know that things aren’t what they used to be, but I’m focused on how I feel mentally and physically. I feel good.’"
I am very glad I was wrong with Carlos Beltran, the Yankees need him more the ever at this moment . With the injury to Jacoby Ellsbury and Slade Heathcott, Carlos Beltran will need to continue his excellent play in right field.
Let’s hope the month of June is just as good, if not better than the month of May for Carlos Beltran.
