New York Yankees Recap: Yanks’ Hold On Against Angels

After sweeping the Mariners in Seattle, the New York Yankees went back home to start a three game series against the Anheim Angels. The halos’ were 28-26 coming in, and the Yanks’ were 29-25 going 4-3 on their road trip before this series.  Nathan Eovaldi would get the ball looking to rebound from a disappointing start vs Oakland.

Something that has been a main topic for the team thus far is the lack of hitting from the lower section of the lineup. Carlos Beltran has recently found his swing, and the same for Chase Headley. However, Didi Gregorius, Stephen Drew, and the back-ups haven’t been anywhere to be found up until this past week and a half. Didi is now hitting just about .230, and Drew (who was hitting just .160 in the first game in Seattle) is now up to .173.

That still sounds terrible, but they both managed to play their parts in the Yankees winning the last four games, and especially tonight.

With the game tied at zero in the second, Drew sent one to the porch for a two run homer. In the next inning Mark Teixeira sent another one, this one as well being a two run bomb. This was Teixeira0s’ 16th homer on the season, and to put this into perspective, remember he hit just 22 last season.

To the fifth inning with Brett Gardner on third base from a triple, on came Alex Rodriguez. With a 2-2 count, A-Rod sent a single to right field, moving him to sole possession of second place on the All-Time RBI’s List. Alex would later go on to move into eighth all time on the All-Time Runs Scored list. He’s undoubtedly been one of the most important pieces to any success the Yankees have had this year, but isn’t that what Alex does?

The game would seem in the Yankees control for good after Didi popped a sac-fly to score Brian McCann, this was then followed by a second Stephen Drew home run. With the two on the night, he now has seven on the season. Drew has showed he can hit successfully in key moments other times before tonight, but the struggle has been him being consistent.

A bright spot for him is the fielding, which is the main reason the Yankees signed him again. As always, the team can only hope he find his swing every night, and can contribute not only on the field, but in the box. The Yankees final run would come on a Chris Young pinch hit single, which was very good for him, going 0-10 on the Yankees last road trip.

The Yankees would keep it clean until the 9th inning, where Esmil Rogers had to come on for just three outs, and secure a seven run lead. Instead Rogers would start a meltdown that gave the Angels two runs, bases loaded, and no outs. Joe Girardi then would go to Dellin Betances to try and end the threat, but Dellin himself walked two and gave up a single. The Angels would make it a one run game, before Dellin finally struck out Carlos Perez for the final out, and an 8-7 win to take the first of three in the Bronx.

The second game will have Adam Warren (3-4) going against Garrett Richards (5-3) at 715 tonight.
