Yankee Recap: Yankees Lose to Nationals in Extra Innings 8-6

It was a good old fashion slugfest in Washington DC, where the Yankees fell to a very good Washington National team, 8-6 in extra innings. It was a back and forth kind of night where the ball just flew out of the stadium all night. In the end the Yankees were not able to get the better of the Nationals, in-game one of this short 2 game series.

In the first inning it did not look good for the Yankees with Ian Desmond hitting a solo shot. Then later in the inning the hottest hitter in baseball, Bryce Harper, hit his 15th home run, leading the National League in that category. Nathan Eovaldi, was very inconsistent, and was not able to go through five innings.

The Yankees were held hitless through the first three innings (Ball didn’t leave the infield), but in the fourth inning that all changed. It started with a Jacoby Ellsbury walk, then an RBI from Chris Young, and then Chase Headley smoked the ball down the line to tie the game at 2-2. Then everybody’s favorite Yankee, Stephen Drew, got a two out two run single to take the lead 4-2. The Yankees were able to have nine men go to the plate, and score 4 runs with some timely hitting.

In that fourth inning Jacoby Ellsbury hurt his knee while he was batting. He was able to run around the bases, but after he scored he went in the locker room. Carlos Beltran replaced Ellsbury, and the Yankees have not given the media anything, but it is a right knee injury.

In the top of the fifth inning the offense continued for the Yankees with Mark Teixeira hitting another home run. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning the glue came undone for Eovladi, giving up base hit after base hit,  and was not able to finish the fifth inning. Justin Wilson was able to come in and double up Harper, leaving the Yankees with a lead of 6-5.

The lead was not held for long as Wilson Ramos hit a moon shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game up at 6. Ramos now has a 19 game hitting streak.

In the tenth inning Andrew Miller gave up his first runs of the season. It was to Ryan Zimmerman walk off two run home run. They were able to complete the comeback 8-6. The Yankees just can not seem to find a break.

The New York Yankees finish up their short series with the Washington Nationals tomorrow at 7:05.
