Yankees News: Top-Prospect Gregory Bird Injured
New York Yankees first-base prospect Gregory Bird, who made a name for himself during spring training and was off to a pretty impressive start to the 2015 season with AA Trenton Thunder (.226/.351/.419) was placed on the seven-day DL on Friday with a right shoulder injury.
Prior to getting injured, Bird was on a tear, recording at least one hit in eight of his last 10 games. He was third on the Thunder in home runs (3) behind Eric Jagielo and Aaron Judge and second in doubles (9) behind Jagielo.
In 2014, the Aurora, Colorado native split time between High-A Tampa and Trenton, posting a combined 14 home runs and 43 RBI with a .271/.376/.472 slash line. He also played in the Arizona Fall League for the Scottsdale Scorpions and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player after posting a slash line of .313/.391/.556 with six home runs, six doubles and 21 RBI in just 26 games played.
The extent of the injury is yet to be revealed, but being that it’s just a seven-day DL stint, it’s likely to be general soreness or something minor along those lines. The Thunder need him back sooner rather than later, as they’ve dropped six of their last nine games.
On a quick side note, be on the lookout for our minor league player of the week series being published tomorrow morning!
