Yankees Editorial: Is Michael Pineda the True Ace?

After tossing eight innings of shutout baseball, it’s become clear that the New York Yankees may have found their new ace.

In the 6-3 win on Tuesday, Michael Pineda threw a career high eight innings, striking out six and walking just one. His lone walk in the bottom of the third to Ezequiel Carrera snapped a personal streak of 20 straight-innings without a walk for the young right-hander. So far this season, Michael Pineda has remarkably walked just three batters of the 156 he’s faced.

With Masahiro Tanaka scheduled to be out for the next few weeks, Michael Pineda has certainly risen to the occasion. He is undoubtedly the ace of their current staff, but can he be the ace of the future?

"“Yeah I mean he’s doing the job, that’s the bottom line,” Girardi told Ryan Hatch of NJ.com. “He’s been as good as anyone we’ve got.”"

However, according to Hatch, Pineda isn’t quite focused on being the ace of the staff.

"“I really just focus on pitching every five days,” Pineda said."

Through 39.1 innings this season, the 26-year old right-hander has remained pine tar-free, and has recorded 38 strikeouts and just three walks, which in tops in the league so far. Not to mention his latest performance was indicative of a true-ace, pitching deep into a ball game at a time when the Yankees bullpen is in dire need of rest.

What do you think Yankee fans? Is Pineda the future ace of the New York Yankees?
