Yankees News: Derek Jeter doesn’t miss baseball, at all

Around this time last year, New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter was in the starting phase of what turned out to be his year-long retirement party.  Throughout the season he constantly faced questions regarding whether he would miss baseball upon the season’s conclusion.  Jeter consistently told reporters that he could not give them an answer until he hung them up for good.

A few months into Jeter’s retirement, he is finally able to answer the question:

"To be honest with you, I don’t miss it at all.  It was the right time for me.  I’m content with what I’m doing now.  I miss my teammates.  You play with guys a long time, but I keep in touch with a few of them.  I do not miss the long hours, the working out.  It’s a full-time job.  I’m glad that I’ve moved on."

These comments come after a rough two weeks to open the season.  If the Yankees turn it around, it will be interesting if Jeter’s tune remains the same.  Jeter has attempted to stay away from the game, but will likely be in the Bronx this year, as Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada are all set to have their numbers retired:

"I needed to get away from it for a while.  I didn’t go to Spring Training; I was not even in Florida for most of Spring Training.  They’re retiring a lot of my former teammates’ numbers this year and I’m pretty sure I’ll be up there for the festivities."

When asked about the Yankees playoff chances in their first year without him, Jeter stated:

"The AL East has always been a tough division, I’m sure it will continue to be tough, but I have no clue."

As the season grows deeper, if the Yankees make a deep playoff run, it’s likely that Jeter’s mentality will change.  Jeter was always a competitor who loved the challenge of October baseball, and come that time, he will miss the opportunity to make another title run.
