Yankees Editorial: Jacoby Ellsbury Getting a Pass

The beginning of the New York Yankee season is filled with a whole heap of question marks. Nobody, however, is talking about the man the Yankees are paying $153 million dollars over seven years for, and that man is Jacoby Ellsbury.

Last year the Yankees invested in their offense by signing three players. Now, Jacoby has clearly been the best of the three they signed, but that is not saying much when you are comparing him to the 2014 offensive numbers posted by the other two signees’, Carlos Beltran and Brian McCann. Let’s be honest, Beltran was dealing with elbow issues nearly the entire season and McCann had his worst offensive year to date.

The Yankees need Jacoby Ellsbury to live up to his contract and be the best offensive player on this team. He needs to get on base, wreak havoc on the base path and piece together some RBIs. This Yankees offense is either old or just cannot hit. Jacoby is paid to be an all-star center-fielder, and needs to be productive this year.

With Ellsbury being paid to be an important piece of the Yankee success, you would think his recent struggles would be a main talking point. Jacoby so far has been able to skate by, and not be a main talking point by the New York media. Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York tells you why Ellsbury is able to hide from the press.

“He is as fast in and out of the locker room as he is on the base paths and, when you do catch him, he is not very revealing. He is not rude, just vanilla. This only matters because it makes him even more unnoticed.”

Sounds like he took a few pointers from Derek Jeter.

Do you think Jacoby Ellsbury is living up to his contract? Are the Yankee press giving him a pass? Do you think the Yankee’s need him to be great in order for the team to succeed this year? Let us know in the comments below!
