Today there were more issues than what the New York Yankees had on the field. Fans were waiting to get inside the gates to see first-pitch on Opening Day, and some would be kept waiting longer than usual. The league updated security rules this off-season to make all fans go through what the league calls ‘necessary precautions’, holding lines up to two hours for some. This caused some fans to miss the start of the game, and would needless to say, make them very unhappy.
While teams and fans have been forewarned about making the game itself faster, they would not see this change become a problem as it was Monday. The Yankees (and other teams) did take precaution as to open gates two and a half hours earlier than usual, however lines were still packed as first pitch time came closer. Feedback over these updated rules drew mixed emotions. Some were accepting of them with the “Better safe than sorry” mentality. Others thought it was a little too much, or could’ve been handled in a more orderly fashion.
Yankees fans were not the only ones to experience delays Monday though. It seems in every stadium across the league fans were unhappy, and missed some game time.
This brings up the question is there anything to really stop delays. It seems parks would have to open up even earlier than two to three hours if they really had to. Lines were packed even without these obstacles at the gates, is it really making that much of a difference? Can stadiums add more gates to cycle people through at a large multitude?
If these problems continue the MLB will have to take some kind of action to counter the upset fans. What do you think could be a solution, or will fans just have to accept the fact there’s a possibility of missing the start of the game if they don’t get there three hours early?
