Yoan Moncada has been the most talked about Cuban player for the last two months and it appears he is close to a final decision on which team will be lucky enough to pay him tens of millions of dollars. Moncada has just one team workout left and he stated that he would like to sign soon after.
The New York Post has Moncada’s agent quoted as saying, “We’ve let teams know that we’re receptive to offers and would like to be able to conclude this process as soon as possible…that way, Yoan can participate in spring training.”
The New York Yankees have been one of the leading teams in position to land the 19-year old, but many teams have joined the pursuit. Recently the San Diego Padres, who have had one of the best off-seasons in baseball, have entered the fray. The Yankees will not be able to sign any international free agents for more than $300,000 for each of the next two seasons, possibly giving them more reason to go after Moncada now.

The Yankees are over their spending limit on international players, meaning they will have a 100 percent penalty for signing Moncada. Some teams expect his signing to approach upwards of $50 million, while there have been rumblings of the Yankees maxing out near $30 million.
With pitchers and catchers starting to report this week, and spring training games just a couple weeks away, Moncada will make his decision within the next two weeks. It should prove to be a very intense period of time for both the young Moncada and the third of the league hoping to land the prospect.
