For the second time in as many weeks, New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances went on the record about his feelings for his friend (?), Alex Rodriguez. The NY Daily News’ Anthony McCarron recently caught up with Betances, who will most likely battle free agent acquisition Andrew Miller for the vacant closer’s job in New York this spring.
When asked if he thought A-Rod needed to apologize to the team upon his arrival in Tampa in the coming days, Betances replied “Not for me…I don’t know how the other guys feel, but, for me, he doesn’t need to apologize. He didn’t do anything to me.”
Rodriguez met with Yankees’ team brass on Tuesday to clear the air, and apologize for the distraction he has been since the Biogenesis/PED scandal resulted in multiple lawsuits, including one against the Yankees, and a season-long suspension. Rodriguez is expected to address his teammates once he reports for spring training in less than two weeks.
Betances previously stated that he and his teammates would welcome back A-Rod with “open arms”, and that the team’s goal is to do whatever it takes to win another championship.
McCarron also caught up with oft-injured starting pitcher Michael Pineda, and when asked about A-Rod, he responded by saying: “I don’t know. I’ve never played together with him. But he’s nice people. I like him a lot. I respect him, too.”
Whether the rest of his teammates feel that way, it’s still unknown, and nobody is going on the record against the beleaguered slugger. Rodriguez is expected to split time between being the Yankees’ DH, part-time third baseman, and there is even talk of working him out at first base this coming spring. Give the Yankees and A-Rod credit for one thing: it’s never boring when you’re covering the New York Yankees.
