Not only do active players like Scott Baker, Alexi Casilla and Ramiro Pena get minor league deals, but players with no big league experience and players who weren’t drafted are looking to catch on as well. Teams are always looking for additional depth and guys who can fill out minor league rosters. Sometimes you can catch lightning in a bottle. This is a player who qualifies as the latter.

The Yankees signed former UCONN pitcher and Berlin, CT native, Anthony Marzi to a minor league deal, according the Hartford Courant. Marzi went 15-22 with a 3.13 ERA, striking out 217 batters in his college career.  Marzi pitched UCONN into the College World Series with a complete game shutout, beating Notre Dame which had current Yankee prospect Eric Jagielo

Marzi went to a workout in Port Chester, which is about 20 minutes from Yankee Stadium. There he touched 90 MPH with his fastball and impressed the Yankees enough for them to offer a contract.

Marzi told the Courant:

"“I’ve been a Yankees fan all my life. My whole family are Yankees fans, and they’re seriously pumped up.”"

Marzi will report to minor league spring training and compete for a spot with an A-ball team.

Berlin CT is about an hour and a half away from the Stadium so if he ever makes the majors, it would be a great story. Hopefully he does well. Good luck to the kid.
