Yankees Acquire More Bullpen Depth

The New York Yankees continue to wheel and deal for relief pitchers for depth in their ever-evolving super bullpen. They have brought in relief pitcher Chris Martin from the Rockies for cash considerations. Jack Curry of the Yes Network seems to like what he sees.

Martin was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 21st round back in 2005. His debut season was sensational as he went 4-0 with a 1.93 while striking out 36 batters in 36.1 innings splitting time as a starter and reliever. He has been up and down the minor league ladder with both the Red Sox and Rockies organizations as he has transformed into a full-time reliever.

The 28-year old righty made his big league debut last season. It wasn’t pretty. He allowed 12 runs in 15.2 innings pitched registering a 6.89 ERA. He did record 14 strikeouts over the same span and a FIP of 3.77 so he may have been a victim of some bad luck. Martin has played in the major leagues and has options remaining, so he is expected to be added to the 40-man roster.

While he will compete for a job in the bullpen with the Yankees this spring in Tampa, Martin seems most likely to begin the season as bullpen depth in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

As the Yankees learned last year, that depth is invaluable as the Yankees rotation and bullpen was a revolving door in the Bronx. Expect to see Martin in pinstripes before the end of 2015.
