Former Yankees top prospect, Jesus Montero, has lost over 30 pounds in an attempt to get his career back on track at the age of 25. Once a top catching prospect, Montero is an afterthought competing for time at first base. After a 69 plate appearance cameo with the Yankees in 2011, which saw Montero hit .328, many believed he would be a breakout star in 2012.Â

Unfortunately for Montero, and the Seattle Mariners organization, this has not happened since the trade for Michael Pineda, also 25, once considered to be a blockbuster. While Pineda has had health issues for the majority of the past three seasons, Montero’s main issues have been controlling his weight.
Late in 2014, this weight issue reached a tipping point when he was suspended for the last month of the season after attacking a scout with a bat due to being sent an ice cream sandwich as a taunt. While Montero was able to give the Mariners a full season back in 2012, it seems highly unlikely that he will be able to contribute in 2015 and beyond as he is blocked on the depth chart by both Logan Morrison and Willie Bloomquist.
Although this news has to be seen as a positive, and maybe Montero can regain some of his trade value, it does not appear as if there is a spot for him on the big league team.
For the near future, it seems as if the Yankees have won this trade, as Pineda figures to be a key cog in the 2015 rotation, after a stellar, yet injury plagued season which saw him only throw 76.1 innings after a two-year hiatus due to shoulder issues.
Add in that Jose Campos could be a future contributor, and Hector Noesi is no longer with the Mariners organization, it’s safe to say this trade has swung in the Yankees favor.
