Will The Yankees Consider Fister, Cueto, And Zimmerman?

There seems to be a decent free-agent class for the next offseason, and there’s a few pitchers I’d love to see the Yankees take a look at for 2016.

Doug Fister

Doug Fister’s coming off the best season of his career. In his first year with the Washington Nationals, the 30-year-old Fister went 16-6 with a 2.41 ERA and a 1.079 WHIP. While I’m not crazy about Fister’s inability to throw substantial innings (he’s thrown over 171 only twice through his six years in the majors), I do like the fact that he only made $7.2 million last year. So assuming he has a 2015 similar to his 2016, you could probably sign him for around $10 million per year. If I were the Yankees I’d have no problem paying a starter with a career 3.34 ERA that kind of money.

Jordan Zimmerman

Jordan Zimmerman could be an excellent addition to the Yankees’ rotation. Last season, the 28-year-old right-hander posted a 14-5 record with a 2.66 ERA and 1.072 WHIP. He also struck out 182 batters through 199.2 innings. What I really love about Zimmerman is that he’s thrown over 195 innings each of the last three seasons. After losing a consistent innings-eater like Hiroki Kuroda, it’d be great to plug a solid arm like Zimmerman into the rotation.

Johnny Cueto

Johnny Cueto is probably my favorite of the group, and I’m sure most would agree. For the 2014 season,  the 28-year-old Cueto was outstanding, going 20-9 with a 2.25 ERA. He threw a league-leading 243.2 innings and struck out 242 batters; also a league high. What may be most impressive though, is Cueto’s 0.960 WHIP. This was the first year his WHIP stayed below 1.000, and that tells me that he’s hitting his prime. The Yankees can still strike gold with this guy if they snatch him up next offseason. And he’ll likely demand at least $17 million per year, but I think a talent like Cueto is worth every penny.
