Yesterday’s Shawn Kelley trade to the San Diego Padres opened the door for another young power arm reliever to be a part of the Yankees bullpen. It worked last year integrated Dellin Betances into the bullpen. The Yankees have a good amount of arms to look at for the spot including top prospect Jacob Lindgren. However, I think the door opens for righty Jose Ramirez.Â

The 24 year old righty made his debut at the major league level last year, and like many rookies before him, struggled in his debut. In eight games, Ramirez had a 5.40 ERA in just 10 innings. While he struck out 10, he gave up 11 hits, seven walks and six runs during that time.
His numbers in AAA were much better in his nine games, going 3-0 with a 1.46 ERA, striking out 16 in 12 innings, however he had a WHIP of 1.87.
Ramirez battled injuries all season long and his season ended because of it. It was also his first year of being a reliever after being a starter his entire career? Sound familiar?
Ramirez will face competition for the role. It’s possible the team relies on Adam Warren as that second righty to go with Betances and Chase Whitley as the long man. Or, if they believe in Warren to give more innings, Ramirez or a guy like Braden Pinder could go in that role.
The Yankees are looking to get younger up and down the roster as they have all off-season. The way the Yankees are building a bullpen of younger power arms. Â Ramirez fits that and has a golden opportunity to land a spot in this bullpen.
