The Yankees and the Red Sox rivalry hasn’t had any spark over the past few seasons. The Yankees haven’t made the playoffs in a couple of seasons. The Red Sox  either win the whole thing or finish in last.  So why would the rivalry start to catch fire this off-season?

CBS Sports Jon Heyman reported yesterday that the Red Sox and Yankees will both go after Pablo Sandoval and Chase Headley this off-season. If Aramis Ramirez enters free agency, he could be the target for either one.
Why? Well, the Red Sox weren’t exactly thrilled with what they got out of Will Middlebrooks in 2014. The Yankees have that Alex Rodriguez guy coming back, but can he be trusted to play very much? Probably not.
Both teams are going to need upgrades at that position, and since that upgrade probably won’t come in the trade market, it leaves each team to go toe-to-toe in free agency, like they did for years.
If Headley re-signs and Kung Fu Panda heads to Boston, it will ignite a debate for years on who got the better third baseman. Who got the better free agent deal.
Is a fight in free agency something this rivalry needs? Maybe. But if both teams are good and fighting for the playoffs next year it will spark it even more.
