Honorable Mention: C Jose Gil (.318, 1 HR, 6 RBI’s)

It’s been a long road in the minors for Gil. He was signed as a free agent by the New York Yankees in 2003 and has been on the farm for every year in his career. After a brief stint with the Orioles’ organization in 2012, New York re-signed him as a minor league free agent in 2013. Last season, in Scranton Wilkes-Barre (AAA), Gil hit .273 in nine games with three RBI’s. The numbers aren’t there for Gil, whose career high of 37 RBI’s came in short-season Staten Island back in 2007, but that doesn’t take away from the good start he has had in Venezuela.

In six games, the 28-year-old has six runs batted in, including at least RBI in six of his last seven games. He had a two-run double back on October 15 for Caribes de Anzoategui (who is off to a 13-2 start), his only extra-base hit of the season up to this point. The six foot, 205 pound catcher is part of the Caribes team that is second in the Venezuelan League in hitting. The catcher position in the Yankees’ organization is deep, but Gil is not likely to make an impact on the major league level considering the stats don’t stand out over the course of his career to this point.
