On this episode of the Yanks Go Yard Radio Show, brought to you by Knoda.com, we at the website decided to do a special episode honoring the Captain, #2, Derek Jeter. The Yankees’ shortstop for the past 20 years has provided fans with countless memories, and Thursday night was the perfect culmination to his Yankee Stadium career. Jeter was 2-for-5 with three RBI, but every fan will remember his walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning.
All night, you could see the emotion when fans chanted “Derek Jeter” and “Thank You Derek.” It was only fitting that the five-time World Series champion and 14-time All-Star would finish the night with yet another clutch hit and celebrate the game with his former manager and teammates, Joe Torre, Tino Martinez, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera as well as his family members. Of course, the one thing you always will remember about Jeter is that he was also very humble, focused on winning, and did everything with class, professionalism, and worked hard every single night.

For this episode, we were very privileged to be able to speak with one of Jeter’s former teammates, catcher Jim Leyritz. Leyritz was Jeter’s teammate from 1995-1996 and 1999, and was able to be a part of two World Series champion teams with the Captain. During the interview, the former Yankees’ catcher talked about what he would take away from Thursday night’s game, and he shared a story about taking the subway in New York City the day of the World Series parade with Jeter in 1996. We at Yanks Go Yard thank Jim for taking time to share these memories with us!
Plus, I was joined by our co-editor at Yanks Go Yard, Billy Brost, as well as staff writer Matt Mirro and Delia Enriquez of Bronx Baseball Daily as part of a Derek Jeter roundtable discussion. During this roundtable, we discussed the following topics:
- Our reactions to the Derek Jeter Farewell Tour – Was it overblown?
- Who is the next leader of the Yankees?
- Why the next face of the franchise isn’t on the Yankees’ roster right now
- What were our favorite Jeter moments both on and off the field?
- Our suggestions for who should be the Yankees’ shortstop in 2015?
- The transition from Jeter’s team to potentially Alex Rodriguez‘s team?
