5. C/DH Isaias Tejeda (.276, 5 HR’s, 29 RBI’s)

It was the third season of New York-Penn League baseball for Isaias Tejeda. So, it makes sense that the 22-year-old would feel a lot more confident on this level. However, he made a significant change to his hitting compared to last season, improving his batting average from .200 last season to .276 this year. While Tejeda didn’t have a great finish to his season (.183 average in August), his last few games did end on a high note.

In the last three games that he played in, the catcher/designated hitter went 5-for-10 with a home run and two RBI’s. The home run came in last Sunday’s 11-3 loss to the Cyclones at MCU Park in Brooklyn. This season was usually filled with extra-base hits from Tejeda. Out of 48 hits in 51 games, 26 of them went for extra-bases, including a league-leading 21 doubles. Those 21 doubles were 16 more than he had in 2013 over a 43-game span.

The third time was the charm for the New York-Penn League All-Star both at the plate and in the field in terms of having fewer errors (3) and passed balls (4) from a season. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Tejeda as both a hitter and a catcher behind the plate.
