Tuesday was another day of mixed results for the Yankees’ Minor League affiliates. of the six games played, the youngsters won three and lost three. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Charleston had no problem scoring runs (14 combined) in their wins, but each team won by just a run. Trenton and Tampa had a rough go of it, combining for just nine hits and two runs in their losses. The two Gulf Coast League squads split their games.

With the 2014 Minor League season coming to a close, its time for the kids to step and finish on a high note. There has been high points as well as low points for the Baby Bombers this season. The lack of consistency throughout the farm has hurt the success of the entire system. Yes, there has been a plethora of injuries for the big league club, that has forced minor leaguers to be called up when they may not be ready, but that’s part of the game. August 31st is quickly approaching, and these last few weeks will give us an indication as to what we can expect to see next season. If these guys want to make a jump to the next level and eventually be playing in the Bronx, it is time to STEP UP! Whether or not their respective affiliate is in contention or not, every individual in the system has something to play for. So let the auditioning begin.

Let’s take a look at how the day played out on the farm.

TRIPLE A

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (64-66) defeat Syracuse Chiefs (74-55) 6-5

Zach Nuding started for the RailRiders, and pitched a good game. He allowed two runs through five innings. He struck out seven and issued two base-on-balls. Despite the solid outing, and leaving with a lead, Nuding failed to pick up a win. Diego Moreno came in to relieve Nuding and allowed three runs on five hits (one home run) in two innings. Luckily for SWB, Jim Miller came in to pitch two scoreless innings, picking up the win. Offensively, Jose Pirela was the story for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He went three-for-five on the day, with a solo home run, a triple, four RBI and two runs scored. In a mediocre season, Pirela has easily been the teams best, and most consistent player. This is a guy with a legimate big league future. Look for him to be one of the fifteen players called up to the Bronx next month. The only problem is it may be too little to late for the New York Yankees. Pirela should have been on the big league roster playing second base, a long time ago. Cashman & Co. dropped the ball on this one, to say the least.

The RailRiders will look for the two game sweep of the Chiefs Wednesday. Bryan Mitchell (4-1, 2.40 ERA) will be on the mound facing off against undefeated, A.J. Cole (5-0, 3.29 ERA). Mitchell is another player looking for a September call up to the big leagues. First pitch from PNC Field is set for 7:05.

DOUBLE A

Trenton Thunder (60-69) lose to New Hampshire Fisher Cats (62-66) 2-1

The Thunder continue to spiral downwards in the final weeks of 2014. After getting swept by the Bowie Baysox, Trenton lost their fourth straight game Tuesday. It’s very rare you see a team combine to throw a two hitter and lose. The Thunder did just that. In a game that was a microcosm of their season, Luis Severino started and went three innings. He gave up both runs on a walk and a home run in his abbreviated outing. He struck out three. Despite the rough day, Severino’s ERA in Trenton sits at a stellar 2.55. A player we knew little about before the season, will finish 2014 as the Yankees’ top pitching prospect.

Ali Castillo tripled in the second inning, driving in Dante Bichette Jr. to score the only run for the Thunder. Francisco Arcia picked up a hit, his average is a team-high .316. Bichette, Tyler Austin and Jake Cave each singled, accounting for the rest of the Trenton’s five hits.

The Thunder will host the Fisher cats Wednesday for the second game of their three-game series. Dan Camrena looks to straighten himself out. Since being promoted from Tampa, he is just 1-5 with a 6.62 ERA. To assure himself a spot on Trenton’s roster next year, the twenty-one year-old needs to finish the season strong. P.J. Waters will be on the mound for the Fisher Cats. First pitch from Arm & Hammer Park is set for 7:05.

SINGLE A

High-A

Tampa Yankees (63-65) lose to Brevard County Manatees (65-57) 2-1

Brady Lail‘s near-prefect outing turned out to be all for nothing. Lail pitched six innings of no hit ball. He issued two walks and struck out three before being pulled to start the seventh. Kyle Haynes came in to pitch the seventh and eighth innings, and did a fine job, allowing just one hit. Chris Smith came in for the ninth, allowed a walk and single, before Tyrone Taylor hit a walk-off two-run single.

It was another inept game offensively, as the Yankees could manage just four hits as a team. Eric Jagielo, Aaron Judge, Anderson Feliz and Kyle Higashioki each had one measly single, with Jagielo driving in the lone run.

Tampa looks to break their two game skid Wednesday, when they host the Manatees at 7:00. Michael Strong (2-1, 2.33 ERA will be on the mound for Brevard County. The Yankees have not announced a starter.

Low-A

Charleston RiverDogs (64-64) defeat Greenville Drive (52-75) 8-7

Rookie Davis started and had another lousy outing for the RiverDogs. Davis lasted just four innings and surrendered five runs on six hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth. After Conor Mullee gave Charleston an inning and tow=thirds of shutout relief, Chad Taylor would come in and give up two more runs in two innings. Luckily for the RiverDogs, Eric Ruth was able to shut the door for the four-out save.

It was a team effort offensively for Charleston, as they collected twelve hits from six different players. Miguel Andujar had three of the hits, including a fourth inning home run. Jackson Valera also collected three hits and Yeicok Calderon singled doubled and drove in two.

The RiverDogs visit the Drive Wednesday and send Andy Beresford (1-1, 3.79 ERA) to the mound to face off against Myles Smith (4-9, 5.87 ERA) First pitch is 7:05.

Short-Season

Staten Island Yankees (31-31) are on the All-Star Break

Luis Torrens, Isaias Tejada, Ty McFarland, and Connor Spencer represented the Yankees. Torrens doubled and took third on an error. He scored the South’s only run on a sac fly.
