Game Three

In the only game of the series that was really no contest, the Yankees knocked around the Tigers’ third former Cy Young winner in Justin Verlander, and then added some insurance for good measure. It wasn’t as if Verlander gave up the farm, yielding only two earned runs in 7 innings of work, with girlfriend and known Yankees’ fan Kate Upton in attendance. Verlander whiffed 5, but allowed a pair of home runs, one to Chase Headley, and the second, for the second night in a row, to Brian McCann.

As good as Verlander was, scrap heap pick-up Chris Capuano was that much better. The crafty lefty handled the Tigers with relative ease, striking out 8 in 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run, and walking only one, receiving a no-decision. Adam Warren came on in relief of Capuano, tossing 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win. David Huff tossed a scoreless 9th, as the Yankees easily handled the Motor City Bengals in the third of the four-game set, by the final of 5-1.

The Yankees were led by Headley, who as previously mentioned went yard, finished with two hits. Mark Teixeira avoided serious injury, needing only stitches on a pinky finger that was originally thought to be broken, on a play in which he was ruled out at the plate. The call was reversed, and Tex was done for the night, much to the chagrin of Yankees’ fans, but he’ll only miss a few days recovering.
