Game One

In what was expected to be a pitcher’s duel, turned out to be exactly that. The Yankees had a tall order in front of them, as reigning Cy Young winner Max Scherzer opened the series on the mound for the visiting Tigers. The Yankees countered with a new found ace of their own, in Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy pitched just well enough, and the Yankees’ bullpen slammed the door, as the Bombers took Game One of the series, 2-1.

McCarthy tossed 5 2/3 innings, and the one Tigers run was unearned, and he struck out 8. The combination of Matt Thornton, Adam Warren, Shawn Kelley, and David Robertson went 3 2/3 scoreless innings, to seal the deal for the Yankees. The dynamic speed duo of Brett Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury is all the Yankees needed on offense, as the two each had a pair of hits, with Ellsbury driving in a run. Carlos Beltran drew a pair of walks, and the Yankees got just enough against Scherzer to steal the win.

Scherzer pitched well enough to win, which was a trademark of the quality pitching on both sides throughout the series, going 7 frames, allowing only the two earned runs, 9 hits, 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Former Yankees’ reliever Phil Coke tossed one scoreless frame in the loss.
