Will Robinson Cano’s New Agent Help The New York Yankees Re-Sign Him?

Robinson Cano will be throwing up the dynasty sign quite a bit from now on. No I’m not talking baseball, I’m talking Jay-Z. Jay-Z is adding to his growing entrepreneurial empire, by adding agent to the mix. He’s starting Roc Nation sports in partnership with CAA and his first client that he’s added to it is Cano.

What does it mean for the Yankees? I think it may be a positive sign for the negotiations. It’s not like the Yankees haven’t negotiated contracts with Scott Boras clients before, but we all know what Boras does. He will always take his guys to free agency no matter what, and tries to milk clubs out of every dollar. You could make the argument that he may have been a contributing factor in Kyle Lohse and Michael Bourn being free agents for so long, however, it wasn’t the only reason.

Cano will no doubt be the face of the Yankees franchise moving forward. He’s their best player right now, and the best second baseman in baseball. With guys like Buster Posey, Elvis Andrus and Justin Verlander locked into long-term deals, baseball is becoming even more of a game of keeping your own as you develop them.

If Cano leaves, it would give the Yankees another hole to fill on an aging team, that has all of its best prospects in the low minors. There’s talk of Cano wanting to do more off-field things. There’s no place better to do it than New York as the face of the Yankees.

Can the Yankees get it done? Only time will tell, however, it wouldn’t shock me if something gets done between the new agents and the club in the next month. The Yankees need to get this deal done and the sooner the better.
