Yankees Continue To Roll With Timely Hitting In 5-0 Win

The Yankees continued their march through their Spring Training schedule on Friday with a shutout win against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater Florida by a score of 5-0.

The Yankees winning percentage for the Spring Training season soared to .750 today with a win over the Phillies by a score of 5-0.

The winning combination of timely hitting and reliable pitching continues to dominate each game and today was no different.

Chase Headley, who is hitting only .200 for the spring, greeted Phillies starter and former Red Sox, Clay Buchholtz, in the very first inning with a home run, scoring himself and two Yankees on base. Aaron Judge added another blast in the sixth inning.

Timely Hitting Setting The Yankees Pace

Of significance, though, is that all four of these runs scored with two outs.

Last season, the Yankees finished in the bottom tier of virtually all offensive categories, including runs scored and on-base percentage. The lack of timely hitting was an eye sore that the team could not shake. So, the production in games like the one today and others this spring is, hopefully, an indication that the team is on its way to a different path.

Of note, the team scored five runs on only six hits today, while last year they might have plated two.

The pitching today was superb, though, not remarkable. The staff surrendered eight walks with starter Chad Green giving up three, Chance Adams three, and Justus Sheffield two.

Jonathan Niese, who is battling for one of the final spots in the bullpen, worked a perfect inning.

Last season when the Yanks were mired in last place towards the end of April, manager Joe Girardi lamented the team’s lack of timely hitting  telling CBS New York at the time:

"“One guy is not going to bail us out,” Girardi said. “Sometimes it can be a broken-bat hit that changes things, and all of a sudden the floodgates open, but right now, we’re not getting it.”"

The Yankees can’t afford to have any more of that kind of talk again this season. The Red Sox, even with the loss of David Ortiz in their lineup, figure to lead the majors in runs scored again and to keep pace, they need to do what they’ve been doing all spring.

A full season from the likes of Gary Sanchez and Greg Bird, and Aaron Judge, plus a continuation of production from Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro should put them in a position to have a very different offensive year in 2017.

Tomorrow, the Yanks will meet the Detroit Tigers at Boss Field for an afternoon game scheduled to begin at 1:05 PM.
