All eyes were on the Yankees during their first exhibition game of 2016, and it was a doozy! A walk-off error put a ‘W’ in New York’s win column as they edged out the Detroit Tigers in a 10-9 slug fest. There were 26 different Yankees that received playing time in the team’s spring opener, but a few players really started the year off with stellar impressions.

Starlin Castro donned his navy-blue pinstripes for the first time on March 2, and he sure didn’t disappoint. Castro went 2-for-3, lining a single to left field in the 4th inning for the Yankees first hit of the ball game and poking an RBI-double past Tigers’ third baseman Casey McGehee in the 5th. The Yankees’ new second baseman also gave fans a tantalizing glimpse of his middle-infield athleticism.

Ranging behind the bag, Castro intercepted a ball hit by Mike Aviles (that had deflected off of Yankee pitcher Tyler Cloyd) and polished the play off with a jump throw to end the top of the 3rd. Castro’s high-end performance was a just a taste of what the front office had envisioned when they acquired him this off-season. Hopefully he’ll continue to impress.
