New York Yankees Rumors: Daniel Murphy to the Yankees Next Season?

Could Daniel Murphy pull the reverse Curtis Granderson and trade in his blue and orange Mets uniform for the Yankees pinstripes next season?

Considering the internal reports of the Yankees likely going with a second-base platoon of Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley in 2016, adding someone like Daniel Murphy doesn’t seem plausible – but as we all know, anything is possible when it comes to the creativity of Brian Cashman.

The 30-year old Daniel Murphy is undoubtedly the postseason MVP to date for the New York Metropolitans, launching big home runs off Clayton Kershaw, Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and of course the solo shot off Zack Greinke that sent the Mets to the NLCS. Thanks to his October heroics, Murphy is now slashing .357/.379/.929 with a 1.308 OPS and eight RBI through the Mets’ first seven games – which is doing wonders for his free-agent market value.

According to Mark Feindand of the New York Daily News, two ‘industry sources’ believe Murphy could command a deal similar to the four-year/ $52 MM deal Chase Headley agreed to with the New York Yankees last off-season.

Murphy will join a second base market that includes Ben Zobrist, Howie Kendrick and Asdrubal Cabrera. Should the Yankees decide to eventually go the free-agent route, the two best options for them are Ben Zobrist and Daniel Murphy simply because both can be considered depth signings. Zobrist can play second base and back up in left-field or even shortstop if needed. Murphy on the other hand can play second and back up at both first and third base should the opportunity present itself.

Murphy’s left-handed swing would make him an ideal fit for the short porch in Yankee Stadium as well. In seven seasons with the New York Mets and the unfriendly dimensions of Citi Field, Murphy is a career .288 hitter while averaging 11 homers and 72 RBI per season.

Also, the signing of Daniel Murphy (or any second baseman for that matter), would give Brian Cashman the opportunity to package Rob Refsnyder in a deal to address other Yankee needs.

Bringing a rival player to the ‘Evil Empire’ isn’t uncharacteristic for the Yankees at all. Cashman brought both Johnny Damon and Jacoby Ellsbury over to the Bronx both one year removed from helping the Boston Red Sox to World Series Titles, and that’s just naming a few.

Would Daniel Murphy be a good fit in pinstripes? What do you think Yankee fans? Let us know in the comments below.
