New York Yankees News: Stephen Drew is Finally Batting .200

Thanks to a 4-for-4 performance during yesterdays 20-6 dismantling of the Atlanta Braves, Stephen Drew finally walked off a baseball field and ended a game with his average sitting above the Mendoza line for the first time this season. As a matter of fact, when the Yankees begin their ESPN Monday Night Baseball matchup against their historic rivals in Boston, the green monster will display the numbers .201 next to Drew’s name when he steps into the batters box.

In the last seven days, Drew alone is a combined 5-for-19 (.267) with one home run, three walks, and four RBI. After his two run homer yesterday off Julio Teheran, Drew now has impressive 16 home runs and 39 RBI on the year, which is arguably the only reason why he has remained in pinstripes for this long.

"“I’m not worried about it,” Drew said of his much-talked-about average to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. “I think just looking at my at-bats, having good at-bats where the outcome is sometimes going to be there and sometimes not — you’re going to line out. It’s a good day offensively for me.”"

Hopefully Drew can continue to keep his average up above .200 through September and get himself into some sort of a groove through the final month of the regular season.

It’ll be interesting to see how Drew does offensively this week up in Boston. He hasn’t yet faced off against Eduardo Rodriguez or Henry Owens, but in game two the Red Sox will send Rick Procello to the mound, who Drew is a combined 2-for-10 (.200) against with a double, a home run and three RBI.

One Red Sox bullpen pitcher who Drew has his way against is Alexi Ogando, who Drew is batting .429 against in seven plate appearances.

"“It’s good to see him get over .200,” Joe Girardi said. “I think he’s hit the ball better than what the numbers indicate.”"
