Yankees Recap: Tempers Flare as Astros Crush Yankees 15-1

Well folks, today was about as ugly as it gets in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees were absolutely crushed by the Houston Astros 15-1, but not before benches would clear during the ballgame.

Ivan Nova took the hill for the Yankees against potential AL Cy Young award winner Dallas Keuchel, and boy did it get ugly quick.

In the top of the first inning the Astros jumped on Nova quickly after Jacoby Ellsbury attempted to dive for a fly ball and missed it, which ultimately resulted in a two-out RBI triple for Colby Rasmus. Carlos Gomez, Luis Valbuena and Marwin Gonzalez each followed up Rasmus with two-out RBI’s of their own, and before the Yankees could even get up to bat they were facing a 5-0 deficit.

Thanks to home runs from Evan Gattis, Marwin Gonzalez, Carlos Gomez and timely hitting from the rest of the Astros lineup, they tacked on four more runs in the fifth inning and six more runs in the seventh innings, and the rout was on.

Nova was pulled after four innings, giving up seven hits, seven earned runs, one home run and four walks. Keuchel on the other hand, dominated the Yankees for a second time this season, tossing seven shutout innings while scattering just three hits and fanning nine Yankees batters. He improved his record to 15-3, and now leads the American League in wins as a starting pitcher.

Things were so ugly that Brendan Ryan had to come in relief from the field to pitched for the Yankees, as he tossed a scoreless eight inning and was easily the best pitcher of the night for the Yankees.

Interestingly enough, Carlos Gomez seemed to anger the Yankees bench after popping out in the sixth, and was shown on TV repeatedly telling John Ryan Murphy to “shut up” before tempers flared and both benches emptied onto the field. Warnings were issued to both the Yankees and Astros, and hopefully the Yankees will use this frustration during tomorrows ball game when they take on the Astros at 1:05 pm in a series rubber match.

Michael Pineda (9-7, 3.97 ERA) will be activated off the DL to pitched against Colin McHugh (13-7, 3.96 ERA) in a Wednesday matinee.
