The New York Yankees came out of Chicago winning two out of three games against the White Sox. The one loss was credited (technically) to Bryan Mitchell, who started his second major league game of his career. With Michael Pineda on the 15-day DL, there was a spot in the rotation up for someone to fill in, and Brian Cashman was looking to see what Mitchell had for an audition.
As Joe Girardi announced going into that game, he was looking for 75-80 pitches from Mitchell, and five innings would’ve been appreciated as well. Mitchell would go four innings, and give up four earned runs. It was 3-1 when Mitchell left the game and he was responsible for one man on. After, Diego Moreno would come in and hit Jose Abreu, and follow that with giving a long ball up to former Yankee Melky Cabrera, the Yankees dug themselves into a 6-2 hole.
Mitchell didn’t pitch horribly considering the circumstances of it being his first start of the year, and to his credit, the Yankees bats were on snooze-mode compared to the thirteen runs scored a day before and the twelve scored a day later. Mitchell at least kept them in the game before his departure. Mitchell also pitched himself out of trouble with some clutch ground balls in the first two innings to plug some holes that were leaking and waiting to burst, but once Melky hit the homer off Moreno, the game was pretty much over, which was the story for each game in the series as they were all one sided. The Yanks’ went into an off-day with a 12-3 victory yesterday.
With the Yankees deciding not to make any trades, they’re going to have to rely on minor league pitchers to fill the gap, whether it’s Michael Pineda’s injury, or any other starter’s. Luis Severino is slotted to make his major league debut Wednesday in the Bronx against the Boston Red Sox. Should Severino play like a number one prospect, it could be the tale-telling sign that it was in fact a good move not trading for an expensive starting pitcher. Cashman has made very good trades in the last year, and for once he is trusting the system by not making a trade, fans should be patient and see how this plays out.
