New York Yankees Editorial: Tanaka’s Lack Of Control Wednesday

As the New York Yankees try and figure out if they need to make more moves for their ailing rotation, Masahiro Tanaka‘s start on Wednesday was probably the best thing to remind them. Though the Yankees had their chances to score, it was an unusual day for Tanaka giving up four earned runs as he’d pick up his fourth loss on the season. His lack on control made it hard for him to finish off batters the way he usually does.

The Rangers’ Josh Hamiliton got started on Tanaka with an RBI single in the second inning. On this particular pitch Brian McCann set the target outside closer to the bottom right corner, but the fastball ended up going right over the plate. That’d be the story for the rest of the game. Next mistake was right after Hamilton’s at-bat, a target from McCann that should’ve produced an inning ending double-play, but turned into an RBI single from Shin-Soo Choo. Then followed by a ball that drifted up the zone for Delino DeShields to bloop right in front of a slow running Beltran.

Despite going six, Tanaka would receive the loss, his first since June 21st, the bats would not be there to bail him out. Manager Joe Girardi spoke on the team’s performance. “He kept us in the game tonight, we just didn’t do a lot offensively”. Tanaka wasn’t terrible, take a walk and a bloop single out of the mix and that second inning might not have even happened, he just didn’t have the control to finish at-bats, and it costed him by that smallest of margins.

So with this recent performance (not that Tanaka is in trouble health-wise), does it mean the Yankees need to go out an get another arm? Is it a big enough reminder that the overall health of this rotation is very suspect? That along with the news coming from Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova today as well, whether serious or not, you’d think they rather be safe than sorry.

Will the Yankees make a move for an arm by tomorrow, or will they cautiously bank on the unknown health of their rotation as is?

One arm that would have fit in was Mike Leake, but according to sources, the San Francisco Giants acquired his services in a deal with the Reds late on Thursday night.
