New York Yankees second baseman Rob Refsnyder showed off just some of his talent in his first two games at the major league level. Hitting coach Jeff Pentland has been pleased with what he has seen so far. However, even with these two games he already sees what he can start helping him with heading into the second half of the season.
The last time Pentland worked with Ref before his recent call-up was back in Spring Training, when the hitting wasn’t close to what it is now. After Refsnyder powered his way up to the majors, Pentland now has time to study his game first hand. Though he said he needed at least a week’s worth of at-bats to fully see what he was dealing with, what was the first thing he noticed on Ref? His energy. “You always think more is better, but we have a veteran group here that will show him what to do“. As for any rookie, the game’s pace is going at a much faster speed even than the Triple-A level. That along with a young player looking to make his impact in the majors.
Someone to look at for an example of this is Bryce Harper in his debut and following games after that. The energy was there, and the want to do something big was as well, but you learn to take it game by game. In the two games before the break Refsnyder went 2-7 with his home run and pair of RBIs. Now with a good couple of days rest to get on the same schedule, Pentland is looking forward to having Ref on the same page (fatigue wise) as the team. As to him carrying a worked body from Triple-A into the clubhouse.
Now he can really get his hands on Ref’s style and tweak that eagerness he sees. “It’s all about getting better and smarter. You don’t try to overwhelm them with information.”
