New York Yankees Trade Targets: Does Aaron Hill Make Sense?

facebooktwitterreddit

When the New York Yankees needed a bat last year, they went and made a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for Martin Prado. The Yankees obtained Didi Gregorius from the D’Backs this off-season in the three team trade involving the Tigers. The Yankees could use another bat on the infield again this year, could they talk with the D’Backs? CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman seems to think so.

"Hill to the Yankees. (These two teams seem to like to trade, and the Yankees still aren’t completely settled at second base."

Hill has another year on top of this one where he is set to make $12 million. He’s hitting .225/.283/.337 in 63 games with four homers and 22 RBI.

In what way, shape or form does this make the Yankees better?

Hill is hitting .254 vs lefties in 63 plate appearances, so they could conceivably acquire him and platoon him at second base with Stephen Drew were they to acquire him.  Drew is hitting .217 vs lefties which ironically, is better than his .171 average vs righties.

The Yankees seem loathe to give Jose Pirela any regular playing time and continue to leave .280 hitting Rob Refsnyder in the minors (though his double on July 2nd was his first extra base hit since June 18)

The Yankees made many changes to their infield last year with the acquisitions of Drew, Prado and Chase Headley. The continue to roll with Drew and Gregorius at second and short, though if I had to guess, with the way he’s hitting, Drew would be the one who could possibly go.

I don’t think that Hill is that guy to acquire to help the team.
