New York Yankees News: Brett Gardner Named AL Player Of The Week

Hitting in the major leagues is hard. Hitting .500 for a week? Really hard. Brett Gardner accomplished that last week, and because of that, took home the AL Player Of The Week award. It’s the third time he’s won the award in his career, with the last one coming on August 3 of last season.

Gardner hit .500 with two homers, four doubles, six RBI, nine runs and five walks. Certainly someone to own in DraftKings at any point last week.

He led the league for the week in hits, runs, on-base percentage, slugging and total bases.

He recorded six hits in six straight at-bats between last Monday and Tuesday’s game for the second time in five games.

Gardner is the third New York Yankees player to win the award this season. Mark Teixeira won the award back on April 26th and Michael Pineda won the award back on May 10.

Gardner, coming into last night’s action, leads the league with 58 runs. He’s hitting .300/.373/.493 with nine homers, 15 steals and 39 RBI.

Gardner is certainly in a position to garner an All-Star nod. He’s been a huge catalyst to the offense with Jacoby Ellsbury going down with an injury. He’s 12th among outfielders in WAR, fourth in doubles, ninth in hits, and tied for fifth in stolen bases.

Ellsbury and Gardner have been lethal when together at the top, and if Ellsbury can hit like he did before he got hurt, and Gardner can continue to produce the way he has this year, the Yankees offense can be really dynamic during the pennant race.
