The New York Yankees yielded five home runs in a 12-4 defeat to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Tigers got started early against Masahiro Tanaka with two home runs in the first inning. Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez each hit two run blasts as Detroit jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Two of the runs were unearned due to a Didi Gregorius error that could have ended the inning. Victor Martinez added a two run single in the second to make it 6-0. [related category]

Brian McCann struck back for the Yankees against Tigers´starter Anibal Sanchez in the bottom of the second. He launched a solo shot to the right field grandstand. It was McCann´s tenth home run and forty-third RBI of the season. The Yankees then manufactured their second run as Chris Young singled, stole second base, and scored on a Brendan Ryan single to center.

In the fifth, J.D. Martinez was at it again. Martinez drilled his second home run of the game with a solo shot that reached Monument Park to increase Detroit´s lead to 7-2. Tanaka´s day was over after five innings. He allowed seven runs and ten hits.

The Tigers batted around in the sixth. Danny Burawa, who was recently called up, surrendered the third home run of the game by Martinez. After the Yankees replaced Burawa with Jose De Paula, Andrew Romine hit Detroit´s fifth home run of the game  When the dust cleared in the sixth the Yankees found themselves down 12-2.

Stephen Drew continues to be home run or nothing. He added two solo home runs, his tenth and eleventh of the season to provide the Yankees final two runs.

The Philadelphia Phillies are next up for the Yankees for a three game series at Yankee Stadium. Speculation is that Ivan Nova may return to the rotation. That could mean Adam Warren may return to the bullpen. The Indians beat Tampa, so the Yankees remain one game behind the Rays.
