After last night’s gut wrenching performance by Nathan Eovaldi, and even with the return of Ivan Nova imminent, the New York Yankees rotation has a lot more questions than sure things. Outside help may be needed. We all know about the big names that could be out there in the trade market, but there’s another one that could be cheaper that they don’t have to go too far to get.
Dillon Gee was DFA’d by the Mets earlier this week, and combining that with the amount of money he’s currently owed for the season, he could be had on the cheap. The way he was yo-yo’d by the Mets, it could be as simple as a change of scenery and clear cut role being the best thing for the right-hander.
First of all his BABIP is .355. That’s absurdly high. 33% of the time balls hit off him were hard hits so far this year. His ERA was 5.39 but his FIP is 4.39 and his XFIP is 4.22.
You want your pitcher to throw strikes, but it’s possible that Gee is actually throwing too many. 51.4% of his pitches are in the strike zone, when throughout his career, he was only in the zone more than 45% just once.
His strikeout rate his down, but so is his walk rate. Guys are just generating more contact off him.
The solution to Gee’s problem’s may just be a change of scenery and trying to get guys to chase more rather than throwing so many strikes. Gee can stabilize the back of the rotation and could be an good pickup on the cheap for a team, whether it be the Yankees or someone else.
