Just hours after the Houston Astros announced the promotion of top prospect Carlos Correa to the bigs, they designated third baseman Matt Dominguez for assignment in order to make room on their 40-man roster. After serving as the Astros primary third baseman from 2012-2014, Dominguez has spent his entire 2015 season with the Fresno Grizzlies, the AAA affiliate of the Houston Astros.
His best season came in 2013, when he batted .241/.286/.403 with 21 homers in 152 games. This year, the 25-year old is hitting .251/.289/.371 with 4 homers and 26 RBI through 45 games played. These aren’t spectacular numbers, but one can make the argument that the Yankees should inquire on signing Matt Dominguez as third base depth behind Chase Headley.
We all know the Yankees are working out Stephen Drew at third base to serve as their primary backup and that Alex Rodriguez‘ will never play third base again, but why not Matt Dominguez?
While Dominguez hasn’t faced major league competition in quite some time, you have to figure he’s more of an upgrade at third base than the .168/.232/.335 hitting Stephen Drew. Brian Cashman has been adamant that both Drew and Didi Gregorius aren’t going anywhere, but it’s important to note that I’m not insisting that the Yankees take Dominguez to replace Stephen Drew on the 40-man roster. Instead, I’m saying the Yankees should sign Dominguez to primarily backup Chase Headley.
It’s not like Dominguez is a defensive liability either. In 2013, a than 23-year old Dominguez rated well in terms of defensive runs saved, which resulted in a 2.2 WAR by seasons end. His glove has garnished positive reviews from scouts for years, and he clearly has some life in his bat, which is proven by the .168 isolated power average he posted in the 2012-13 season.
Dominguez isn’t going to be a difference maker for the Yankees by any means, but should they inquire, he can provide the team with more depth at third base than they already have.
