New York Yankees News: Adam Warren Remains In Starting Rotation

With Masahiro Tanaka making his return Thursday, the New York Yankees were forced to evict one of their starting pitchers to the bullpen. Manager Joe Girardi cleared the air by stating that Chris Capuano will be headed to the bullpen, thus retaining right-handed Adam Warren in the starting rotation.

The move comes to no surprise. Since Capuano’s 2015 Yankees debut, it being late due to his disabled list stint, he has been nothing more than subpar. Yankees’ fans expecting a dramatic turnaround for Capuano’s career were, perhaps, too optimistic.

During his time in the Yankees starting rotation this year, Capuano held an atrocious 6.39 earned run average (ERA), while having a record of 0-3. Due to injuries sustained by the pitching staff, it was close to mandatory that the Yankees plugged in Capuano into the rotation. With Tanaka’s return, and Ivan Nova‘s return on the bubble, the fit for Capuano results in bullpen work.

Warren on the other hand has earned his right to stay in the rotation. In 10 games, Warren holds a formidable 3.75 ERA. His record does not show himself justice, as he has a record of 3-4. In addition to these statistics, shockingly, Warren has been arguably the second most consistent pitcher, behind Michael Pineda.

The situation in itself is ironic. The Yankees signed Capuano with intentions to use him as their fifth starter, but due to his quad strain which landed the pitcher on the disabled list, as stated earlier, Warren earned the fifth spot initially.

In addition, in 2014, Warren provided Girardi with a stable bullpen arm, holding a 2.97 ERA in 69 games.

With the addition of Capuano to the bullpen, Yankees fans shouldn’t be too excited, as it looks only as a depth move. In 2014 with the Boston Red Sox, Capuano pitched out of the bullpen; during the time he posted a 4.55 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.

The question still remains; who will be sent down to clear space for Tanaka? Could we see left-hander Jacob Lindgren sent down, or perhaps right-hander Esmil Rogers? Later, Girardi specified that the he could utilize Capuano as a short-reliever as well.

Given Warren’s success, Nova’s return is more than likely next. Warren will need to provide Girardi will an even better reason to keep him in the rotation, enforcing his job security. Warren went on to say that he consistently creates more of a reason to work harder.

"“I never want to be satisfied,” he said. “I know I can keep going forward. I can keep having better outings. So by no means am I satisfied or getting comfortable.”"

As the questions flutter the Yankees organization, especially with their pitching rotation, Warren has installed himself into a ordinary in the Yankees starting rotation, for now.
