Yankees News: Brendan Ryan Injured Again

New York Yankees middle-infielder Brendan Ryan cannot catch a break.

Coming out of spring training he was supposed to be the every-day backup infielder, and probably would have seen a significant amount of action considering his defensive abilities and the fact that both Stephen Drew and Didi Gregorius have struggled at the plate all-season. Unfortunately, Ryan suffered one injury after the other, and has yet to join the big league roster to date.

First it was a back injury suffered during his annual winter workouts in February. Then it was the grade-two calf strain at the tail end of spring training that forced him to be carried off the field. And now, skipper Joe Girardi announced over the weekend that Brendan Ryan pulled his hamstring while jogging.

The groin pull was suffered down in Tampa, Fl. where Ryan was wrapping up his calf rehab routine. “He was running Saturday and his hammy grabbed, a little bit,” Girardi told Ryan Hatch of NJ.com. “So I think he’s shut down for a week.”

Brendan Ryan has been with the New York Yankees since 2013 when he was acquired in a trade from Seattle. The 33-year-old has eight years of major league experience, and is in the final year of his two-year, $5 million deal with the Yankees.

With Jose Pirela set to re-join the Yankees on Wednesday, I’m not sure how much of a role with the team or if there’s even a roster spot available for Brendan Ryan when he’s ready to return from injury. Stephen Drew is capable of playing both shortstop and second base like Brendan Ryan, so it’s likely the Yankees set up a three-man rotation between Pirela, Drew and Gregorius in the middle-infield positions, likely leaving Ryan as the odd man out.

I guess time will tell.
