New York Yankees reliever Dellin Betances was spotted limping after leaving the mound in Wednesday’s 3-2 13-inning loss to the Tampa Rays. According to the NY Daily News, the right-hander revealed he has a blister on the big toe of his left foot, but that he does not expect to miss any time. Betances pitched a perfect 8th inning before appearing to wince in pain and favor his left foot on his way to the dugout. Fortunately, it appears that this is nothing to worry about, as Betances told reporters that he was “good” and that he “could have gone back out there” offering a sigh of relief in a week of bad news for Yankees’ pitching.

The news  that Betances has nothing more serious than a blister, will likely come as a relief as Yankees’ fans are still reeling from the news that starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka has been placed in the 15-day DL and is not expected to return to the Yankee lineup for at least a month. The loss of another pitcher would place pressure on a relief core that has been stellar so far this season.

In the burgeoning 2015 season, Betances has made 11 appearances allowing only one run in 12.1 innings. If Betances were to miss time, it would be a big loss for the back-end of the pen as the Yankees have relied on the “twin towers” of Betances and Andrew Miller in closing out games. The bullpen has been a strong part of the Yankees recent success. The bullpen has been called upon quite often this season and with the DL stint for Tanaka, the struggles of CC Sabathia and the question marks surrounding Adam Warren and Chase Whitley it is imperative that the bullpen remain healthy.

The Yankees recent winning streak has landed them with an AL East best record of 13-9 heading into a weekend series with the second place Boston Red Sox.  The Yankees will need a strong showing from their outstanding bullpen this weekend and it is welcoming news that Betances’ limp is nothing more serious than a blister.
