Yankees News: Chase Whitley To Start Tuesday
By Jason Evans
The Yankees plan all along during this stretch was to give guys like Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda some extra rest throughout this tough upcoming stretch. That plan is coming to fruition as Pineda will be getting some extra rest with the news that Chase Whitley is on his way up to start on Tuesday.
The 25 year old was impressive during spring training, posting a 1.17 ERA in seven games. In 15.1 innings, he gave up 13 hits, walked three and struck out 12.
Whitley is 2-0 in three starts down in AAA with a 2.12 ERA. Whitley has given up 13 hits in 17 innings and struck out 13 while walking six.
Whitley deserves the shot to start. He’s pitched very well for AAA Scranton and if the Yankees need the extra starter then he can be a great option.
Tampa Bay hasn’t had a great offense all season long, so if Whitley is going to start against someone, this could be the team. Whitley pitched just four innings against Tampa last year only giving up a hit and striking out four.
You have to wonder who they will send down to AAA for Whitley. Will Chasen Shreve go down for another 10 days? Will Esmil Rogers be DFA’d? Will Chris Martin, who seems to have Joe Girardi‘s trust be sent down? We shall see on Tuesday, because they don’t have to announce the move until then.
