Yankees Editorial: Are The Yankees Flying Under The Radar?

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s kind of a weird question, but in New York right now it may be a valid one. The Rangers and Islanders are in the midst of a Stanley Cup chase. The Nets are in the playoffs. The Knicks are their usual mess (Thanks James Dolan). As the Yankees get set to take on the Mets this weekend in the earliest Subway Series ever, the Mets are the it team right now.

This series dates back to 1997. The Yankees always had the bigger stars during this series. Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. Yes the Mets had Mike Piazza, but Jeter was always the biggest star in New York. That really isn’t the case right now. Matt Harvey is the IT guy in New York baseball right now, and quite possibly in NY sports in general. The comeback from Tommy John. The Dark Knight. The flamethrower.

Could you argue Alex Rodriguez is on that level? Maybe, but after all the steroids and the age it’s probably Harvey’s time. Of course, with the Mets winning 11 straight games and having the best record in baseball, they are the talk of the town.

The Yankees are rolling too, winning six of their last seven after a rough start to the season and now are over the .500 mark. The Yankees are turning back the clock a bit to their Bronx Bomber ways with all the homeruns and all of the runs they are scoring of late.

The Mets are the talk of sports right now. The Yankees used to treat these games as trying to beat up the little brother who thinks they can compete. The Mets are even discounting tickets for next homestand based on the number of runs they score this weekend.

The Yankees are in a new role in this Series. A bit of an underdog/flying under the radar role. You know what? That’s perfectly fine.
