Yankees Rumors: Brian Cashman Searching for Pitching Depth?

With the 2015 season having just gotten underway, it’s been reported that the New York Yankees are on the hunt to add pitching depth, but not where many fans would think.

According to Brendan Kuty of Nj.com, Brian Cashman is looking to add a starting pitcher who he can stash in the minor leagues as injury concerns continue to circulate their major league rotation.

The Yankees already have proven backend starters in Chase Whitley and Bryan Mitchell, but apparently they wan’t more options just in case an injury should arise.

One name who’s been mentioned around the Yankees rumor mill as of late was veteran free-agent pitcher Wandy Rodriguez, but the Texas Rangers agreed to terms with him late Monday evening on a one-year deal.

Other notable options include veteran free-agent pitchers Paul Maholm and Kevin Slowey.

Despite the fact that Paul Maholm pitched relatively well this spring, the Cincinnati Reds decided to release him, instead electing to give the final spot of their rotation to the 36-year old Jason Marquis. Prior to this spring, Maholm posted a 4.71 ERA in 71 innings pitched for the Dodgers in 2014.

Kevin Slowey, sharing a similar fate, was released this spring by the Philadelphia Phillies. However, unlike Maholm, Slowey was rocked this spring. He pitched in seven Grapefruit League games, two of which were starts and he allowed 11 runs, nine of which were earned, on 15 hits over 11 2/3 innings.

Personally I think both Chase Whitley and Bryan Mitchell would be much better options than either Maholm or Slowey, but we all know Brian Cashman works in mysterious ways.
