Yankees Editorial: The Similar A-Rod and Matt Harvey Comeback Stories

facebooktwitterreddit

Two New York baseball teams, two tri-state area natives, two completely different yet eerily similar New York comeback stories.

Alex Rodriguez, born in Washington Heights, NY, is coming back from serving the longest suspension ever handed to a baseball player for violating baseballs drug policies. He is trying to balance an illustrious career, headlined by 14 All-Star Game appearances, three American League MVP awards and in striking distance of the home-run record, with a career full of mistrust and lies, and the only way he can do so is by playing the game he loves.

Matt Harvey, born in New London, CT is coming back from the dreaded Tommy John surgery, holding the hopes and dreams of the entire New York Mets fan base on his shoulders. His career is just blossoming, but only if he can remain healthy.

Two comebacks from opposite worlds, with each super star trying to regain their past success for his team to succeed.

Matt Harvey, New York City’s ‘White Night’, has lifted the spirits of the entire Mets fan base.

“Being positive and having a good attitude towards winning and getting to the place where we want to be is part of who I am,” Harvey told Kevin Kernan of the New York Post. “If you are a fan of any team you would want that kind of push and drive from your player.”

Mets fans look at their right-handed pitcher, who turns 26 next month, and envision a winning season for the first time since 2008 when they finished 89-73. That’s the power behind the meaning of Matt Harvey’s comeback. He’s the pumping heart-beat of a franchise that has had so much failure.

As for the other comeback in town. The one we’ve covered extensively here at Yanks Go Yard.

Alex Rodriguez, who turns 40 in the middle of the baseball season, is trying to keep his roller coaster  of a career alive with the New York Yankees after disgracing himself in the heat of the 2013 Biogenesis Scandal.

Throughout the Yankees spring training season, the 14-time all-star has expressed how humble he is to return to baseball, but similar to Matt Harvey, there still remains a level of confidence in his ballgame.

According to Kernan, as Alex walked up the tunnel and onto George M. Steinbrenner Field one fine spring day, he ran into an old scout who has known him since his rookie debut in 1994.

The scout told Rodriguez that he had been keeping a close eye on his swing, and said it still has some power behind it.

Rodriguez told the scout, “I’ve got some bullets left”, and he better, because the Yankees are relying on Alex Rodriguez’ bat in the middle of their lineup to produce run support.
