Yankees Editorial: Time To Give Adam Warren The Starting Spot

Once Chris Capuano went down for the New York Yankees, the fifth starter competition blew wide open. I had previously made the argument that Adam Warren should be the guy, and this spring, he hasn’t done anything that would say otherwise. Because of his performance so far, it’s time to give Warren the shot, finally, at the fifth spot in the rotation.

Warren pitched well out of the bullpen last season in his first full year in the majors and he never really got a shot to start full time in the big leagues.

Yesterday, Warren went five innings, giving up only four hits, one run and striking out three. This spring, he’s 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA. He’s only struck out six in his 12 innings.

Here’s what Joe Girardi told NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty:

"“Adam threw the ball exceptionally well today,” Girardi said. “That’s what competition does. You’re going to have a lot of discussion about it.”"

Warren felt good about the outing, but needs to work on a couple of things:

"“I felt good about that today,” he said. “Obviously, there’s still a few (breaking pitches) that I’m hanging or backing up a little bit. So I just need to work more on the consistency of it, coming with the mechanics and how comfortable I feel out there pitching.”"

The Yankees have enough depth in the bullpen, to where Warren can be moved into the rotation. If he fails, you move him back and give Esmil Rogers or Bryan Mitchell a shot until Capuano and Nova come back. Until then, the first time the Yankees need a fifth starter, #43 should be getting the ball. He was drafted as a starter. He came up as one. It’s time to do it in the show.
